Community Meal

4:00 – 5:30 p.m.

This month, we will, again, be engaging in our community meal program: preparing dinners to be available for pick-up or delivery.  These meals are our gift to the community:  to anyone who is in need of an evening of not cooking or the love that goes into making the food.

Menu:  Pork BBQ sandwiches, baked beans, macaroni salad, berry crisp

If you are interested in helping, we will be cooking meals from 9:30-11:30 a.m.; assembling from 3-4 p.m.; and distributing / delivering from 4-5:30 p.m.  In addition, if you would like to bake berry crisp (your recipe of choice) at home, please drop off by 10 a.m. on July 16th.

Sunday, August 4, 2024 service bulletin

July 16, 2024

“Don’t neglect to open up your homes to guests, because by doing this some have been hosts to angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2, Common English Bible)

Members and Friends of Valley,

One of the most heart-warming aspects of my experience at General Assembly in Salt Lake City was the amazing hospitality shown to us by our hosts from the Presbytery of Utah.  It is no small task to welcome, guide, and assist more than one thousand commissioners, advisory delegates, national staff, and volunteers for a week, and these Presbyterians handled their task with efficiency, joy, and grace.

The first Presbyterian mission workers arrived in the western territory that would become Utah in the mid-1800’s, roughly the same time as the Mormon church was established in the area.  Thus, there has never been a time when they did not live, work, and worship alongside a much-large presence of the Church of the Latter-Day Saints.

Currently, there are twenty Presbyterian churches in the entire state of Utah, with just over 3,000 members.  Eight of those congregations hosted guests for worship on Sunday and each provided lunch for their many guests.  I spent the morning at Cottonwood Presbyterian Church in suburban Salt Lake City and was fascinated to hear the many ways they are involved in the community, particularly in food ministries and helping recent immigrants.  And throughout the week, volunteers were present in and around the convention center to assist visitors in multiple ways.

I always consider it a privilege when Valley is able to host visitors into our church home.  This week, we will be providing a free community meal; folks will be coming to shop at our Pass-It-On resale store; and others will be dropping off clothes and school supplies in our parking lot this Saturday for the Homeless Hookup CLE back-to-school drive.  These ministries help to facilitate the strengthening of our community by both giving help to those who are in need and offering ways for people to share of what they have in impactful ways.

Throughout scripture, angels are the sometimes mysterious figures who deliver God’s message.  As the church, we believe that by providing opportunities for sharing, we are helping to spread God’s message of love.  And that is what we want our church home to be – a locus of hospitality which offers welcome, sharing, caring, and love.

Thank you all who help to make our church a home of hospitality.

In Christ,
Pastor John
