June 17, 2021

“See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.” (1 John 3:1)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This Sunday – in our lives and in our worship – we remember the ways that we have been nurtured, protected, and loved by our earthly and heavenly Fathers.

For some of us, our father’s love is like God’s love – too deep, too wide, too strong to measure.  For some of us, God’s love fills the empty spaces that our fathers left behind.

All of us are shaped by our relationship with our fathers.  On this particular day, we remember what it means to have a father or to be a father; we recognize the importance of fathers in our communities; and we pledge as a congregation to love and nurture the fathers – and their children – among us so that God’s love will be made known.

This is a prayer one of my colleagues has written for this day:

God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old.  We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; may they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice.  We pray for fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; may they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow.  We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice.  We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love.  Amen.

Blessings to all of you – fathers and children of fathers; for we are all part of God’s family.

In Peace,
Pastor John

“God makes it grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:7)

Sisters and brothers in Christ,

As I write this on Friday morning, the sun is shining after last evening’s rain.  I am looking forward to walking out to the Faith Garden at the church to see what has grown.

Six years ago, we started the Faith Garden to supplement what is grown at the Chagrin Falls Park Community Center to give to clients of the food bank.  Everything that we harvest is donated to help people have fresh, healthy food for their families.

This year, we have planted beans, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, carrots, onions, scallions, okra, kale, mustard greens, and swiss chard.  Volunteers from the church water, weed, fertilize, stake, and pick the garden.  And yet, as every gardener knows, it remains a mystery which crops will struggle and which will thrive.  God provides the growth.

Later this summer – when I am on my six-week Sabbatical – I am sure the garden will continue to be well-tended, and I hope that we are able to offer a bountiful harvest to assist the food bank.  While I am looking forward to this period of rest and renewal, a part of me will be wondering how the garden is doing; what is struggling, what is thriving; what God is growing.

This is similar to the way that I feel about temporarily setting aside this pastoral call during my Sabbatical:  I believe that God will be caring for you, providing you the presence the congregation needs to feel and voices that members needs to hear.  I am grateful for this amazing opportunity and trust it will be a good time of rest and renewal – and growth – for all of us.

Trappist monk, Thomas Merton, once said, “To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything God has given us – and God has given us everything.”  As a part of my Sabbatical travel, I am looking forward to visiting the Abbey of Gethsemane, where Merton lived for much of his life, and to grow in gratefulness for God’s generous love.

May all of our gardens – and recognition of gratitude for God – grow.

In Christ,
Pastor John
