Who is my Neighbor?

July 2, 2020

O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker! (Psalm 95:6)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

What an honor and privilege to worship the Lord our God.

After four months of “at home” worship, we believe that it is time to offer the opportunity for members and friends of Valley to gather together in worship on Sunday morning, if they choose. We will be having worship in our outdoor Chapel this Sunday, July 5 at 10:30 a.m. Online access to the worship service will continue to be available via Facebook Live and the church YouTube channel for those who wish to stay home. If there is rain, worship will be on-line only. Plans for future worship services will be announced later.

While there are still inherent risks to gathering – related to the Covid-19 virus – Session has decided to implement the following measures in an attempt to reduce those risks:

• High risk individuals are strongly encouraged to continue to remain at home.
• If you are not feeling well (cough, fever, sore throat), PLEASE stay home!
• Worship attendees should wear a face covering. Disposable masks will be available.
• Please choose seating to remain socially distanced on benches or your own chair.
• Offering baskets will be available but not passed. Donations will continue to be collected via mail, by dropping off at the church office or online.
• There will be no passing of the peace. If you greet others before or after the service, please do so with a wave or elbow bump rather than a hug or handshake.
• There will be no hymnals or bibles; paper bulletins only.
• Congregational singing is discouraged. You may hum or sing quietly to yourself. This is a difficult change, but health experts strongly caution against group singing.
• Although this is the first Sunday of the month, communion will not be offered.
• For the time being, there will be no coffee-hour fellowship. If you choose to visit with others after the service, please keep walkways clear; so that others may safely exit.

We are all learning how to adapt to these changing realities while continuing to be the church that God calls, gathers and sends. Thank you for your faithfulness and prayers.

In Christ,
Pastor John

Henry Cregar –
Eagle Scout Project
Dear Valley Presbyterian Church Congregation,

I am working towards my Eagle Rank in Scouts. I’ve been approved by the Session of Valley Presbyterian Church and by Bainbridge Township to set up a flagpole with an American Flag, including lighting and a base in the front yard of the church, near Chillicothe Road.

Also, with Mrs. Bulanda’s consent, I plan to dedicate this project to Tom Bulanda, my mentor, my friend, and an Eagle Scout himself. When this is complete there will be a dedication ceremony at the site, and you all will be invited.
Starting through the plans I’ve realized that this project is going to be rather expensive and part of the requirement as a whole is fundraising. I am writing to you now asking for donations, with the goal of raising $2,000.00. Every donation counts so I hope that I can have your support through this.
Thank you!
Henry Cregar

July 5, 2020 Service Bulletin

June 26, 2020

Return us, Lord, to yourself.  Please let us return!  Give us new days…
(Lamentations 5:21, CEB)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Every two years, our denomination – the Presbyterian Church (USA) – holds a General Assembly: a gathering of elected representatives from around the country and beyond to worship, discuss and take actions for and on behalf of local congregations.  This year, as with so many other planned gatherings, the Assembly has become a virtual event and much of the regular, non-essential business has been postponed until the next Assembly, scheduled for 2022 in Columbus, Ohio.

The theme of the 2020 Assembly – based on the passage above from the book of Lamentations – is From Lament to Hope; a fitting message for this current season of pain and protest.  It is a plea for God to make way for a turn; for a new day to dawn; of hope for real and substantive change.

Among the business that has been accomplished through this year’s General Assembly is the “Statement from the Special Committee on Racism Truth and Reconciliation” which strongly affirms our denomination’s commitment to:

• calls for justice for those who have been and continue to be impacted and injured by the unjust structures of racism and oppression.
• call for our denomination and society to commit to engaging in the work and practice of eliminating racism.
• call for white people to recognize their privilege in society and engage in the work of eliminating racism and racist acts against people of color.

In a statement released this week, the Special Committee wrote:  “As followers of Jesus Christ, who loves all and calls us to challenge the unjust structures of church and society, we are called to work for justice and peace for all God’s people”.  Follow this link for more information about the work of the Committee:  https://www.pcusa.org/news/2020/6/25/statement-special-committee-racism-truth-and-recon/.

Moving from Lament to Hope will indeed be a challenge; one that will require time, courage and humility.  If you are interested in engaging this topic more directly, our Presbytery’s Race Action Network will be reading Layla Saad’s Me and White Supremacy and hosting a Facebook group discussion.  For more information, contact:  raceaction@preswesres.org.

We invite you to join us via Facebook Live or YouTube for worship this Sunday:  we will continue our look at the book of Lamentations and be led in music by Payton and Parker Timmons.  Next Sunday, in addition to online worship, we have planned an in-person worship gathering in the outdoor chapel (weather permitting) with necessary health precautions and social distancing.

I will, also, remind you that the Pass-It-On store is open today (Friday) 2 – 6 p.m. and tomorrow (Saturday) 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a limit of six customers at a time; thank you to everyone who has supported Pass-It-On while it has been closed these last three months.  Also, don’t forget to sign up to receive our virtual Vacation Bible School program – “Who is My Neighbor?”.

My prayers continue for our congregation’s safety and wellness; and that those blessings might extend to all people.

In Christ,
Pastor John
