“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart…” (Psalm 9:1)

Members and Friends of Valley –

Each year, as the seasons turn from spring to summer, we pause to give thanks to Valley’s many volunteers:  musicians and worship leaders, sound and video coordinators, mission volunteers, money counters, and more.  In thanking them, we, also, offer gratitude to God for gifting and lifting up those who serve.

At the same time, we, also, honor graduates who have completed their diplomas or degrees and are preparing to transition to new opportunities.  We celebrate their accomplishments and give thanks to God for the care and ongoing support for what comes next.

These transitions – whether a pause at the end of a program year or in preparation for a new stage in life – are worth celebrating.  We were created as social beings; what we feel and hear from others makes a difference in whether we can harness the energy, intelligence, imagination, and love necessary to serve in the ways God calls us.

I hope you will join me in giving thanks to graduates and volunteers; and in giving thanks to God for gathering us as the church so that we can be sent out as Christ’s disciples in the world.

In Peace,
Pastor John

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.” (Acts 2:4)

Members and Friends of Valley,

Painting by Jennifer Rodriguez

Magdalena Garcial
“Blow and Blaze”
A reflection/confession based on Acts 2:1-13

Segregated by race and divided by class,
speaking one language and listening to insiders,
hoarding resources and neglecting the poor,
the church gathers in lovely spaces
and prays for a new awakening,
forgetting or misunderstanding
the events of Pentecost.
Was it the wind?, we ask in desperation,
and attempt adjusting the sails
by undertaking one more restructuring,
while we cleverly garner
what we have no intention of sharing.
Was it the fire?, we ask in consternation,
and attempt fanning the flames
by sponsoring one more conference,
while we boldly proclaim
what we have no intention of doing.
We don’t know much
about the disruptive and transformative
power of wind and fire,
because we are afraid to invite them
into our orderly and privileged lives;
but this we do know…
Pentecost happened as the people were
gathering together in one place,
speaking multiple languages,
embracing the outsiders,
understanding one another,
stepping out of their comfort zone.
Blow, Wind of change, through the church,
sweep up our illusion of control,
create a new disposition to welcome and to hear,
and launch us into the unknown.
Blaze, Fire of passion, through the church,
burn up our complacent attitude,
create a new capacity to embrace and to heal,
and propel us towards the forgotten.

Friends, the Holy Spirit is with us – urging us to be the bold, compassionate, beautiful church for the world.

In Christ,
Pastor John
