“We must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.” (Hebrews 2:1)

Members and Friends of Valley,

A local congregation of a sister denomination – whose building I walk by often – sometimes displays a banner outside that reads:  “God Is Still Speaking.”

At times, I am jealous that the Presbyterians did not come up with this slogan, themselves.  It fits well with our Reformed tradition, that the church is and must be transforming.  It calls us to pay attention to the movement of the Holy Spirit and the voices of others who reveal God’s living Word.

And yet, it, also, poses challenges. If the Spirit is active, how do we discern its movement?  If God is speaking through others, how do we know which voices are or are not authentic?  In our day, these are difficult tasks.

For the four Sundays of August, we will be looking at passages from the New Testament Book of Hebrews, which – as biblical scholar, Francis Taylor Gench, writes – addresses people who have been Christians for some time, but who find that their earlier enthusiasm has faded and their faith commitment is on the wane.  They have grown “sluggish,” and are in danger of “drifting” and “falling away.”  Many have stopped attending the Christian assembly altogether.  Moreover, they have ceased to grow in their understanding of the Christian faith.  They are in a state of arrested development as Christians!

At certain points in our individual and congregational faith journeys – and, sometimes, especially in the month of August – we might feel “sluggish,” or in danger of “drifting” or “falling away.”  Certainly, over the last two-and-a-half years of COVID, most churches have experienced a decline in growth and energy.

And so, Hebrews encourages us – even today – to pay greater attention; to listen, learn, and grow in our understanding of what Christ is calling us to be and to do; to remind one another that the Spirit is still moving, that God is still speaking.

Even in these final, sultry weeks of summer, I encourage you to pay attention with us; that we might discern how Valley can best love our neighbors and work to usher in God’s vision of shalom.

In Christ,
Pastor John

“Be hospitable with one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” (I Peter 4:9-10)

Members and Friends of Valley,

During my recent trip to Europe, I was able to enjoy some majestic sights – like in the picture above – ancient cities and towns, placid lakes and streaming rivers, rolling hills and snow-capped mountains.  Whether sitting on an outdoor terrace or hiking through the Alps, I feel incredibly blessed to have taken all this in.

But one of the true blessings that Brenda and I experienced during our travels was the hospitality we were shown by friends made across the decades.  It is an amazing thing to be welcomed into someone else’s home and heart; and to be treated with such generosity and care.

Of course, one of the benefits of travel is that when you are exposed to new places, peoples, languages, and cultures, you realize that some of the beauty you find need not remain limited to particular parts of the world.  We may not find 14,000-foot peaks here in Ohio, but we can still show hospitality toward one another with the gifts we have been given.

We are, indeed, stewards of the manifold grace of God. The way that we welcome and treat each other offers a reflection of God’s grace and God’s gifts.  Sometimes, hospitality is hard; it can be inconvenient.  But let us not complain when the chance to treat others well comes around.  Let us, instead, use it as a way to give glory to God and live out the greatest commandment.

In Christ,
Pastor John
