Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. (Philippians 4:4)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Christian author C.S. Lewis is quoted as saying: The perfect church service would be one we were almost unaware of. Our attention would have been on God.

As a worship planner and leader, it is difficult to know what elements to include in order to create a “perfect church service”. Prayer, scripture and music; words of welcome and encouragement; opportunities for giving and receiving forgiveness; examples of faith; glimpses of hope.

Moving to virtual worship has created new challenges. How do we learn how others are doing without seeing them face-to-face? How do we remain unified in spirit and purpose when we are apart? How can we show love from a distance?

The passage above from Philippians continues: Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Jesus Christ. (4:5-7)

As we continue our worship – on Sunday mornings and at other times during the week – let us put our trust in God that we can experience that peace which lies beyond human explanation; the ability to rejoice in the Lord, always; and that our focus might be on God’s presence among us, beside us, in us and with us. May the Lord truly be near – for us as individuals and as the collective body of Christ.

This week, our worship gathering will, again, be virtual only. We will begin looking at Esther, the last of the five Forgotten Books of the Bible and be able to enjoy some beautiful musical selections by John Kautzman. Next Sunday, August 16, weather permitting, we will have an in-person worship service in the outdoor chapel that will, also, be livestreamed. Please join us if you are able.

Blessings for health and safety to all y’all,

Pastor John

We are hard pressed on any side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair… (2 Corinthians 4:8, NIV)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I returned home from ten days of summer vacation travel to hear this scripture passage quoted during the funeral service for Rep. John Lewis. I remember – from my time working in Washington, DC years ago – listening to a floor speech given by Rep. Lewis about voting rights. It was a powerful reminder about the sacrificial courage of civil rights advocates almost 30 years ago then, and over 55 years now. Yes, the struggle for justice can seem difficult, and perplexing, but can never be abandoned.

This week, our Presbytery voted to officially join our denomination’s Matthew 25 movement – a step our session took last year. Matthew 25 focuses on three distinct areas of justice work:

• Building congregational vitality
• Dismantling structural racism
• Eradicating systemic poverty

Now and into the future we – as a congregation, as a Presbytery, as a denomination, and as followers of Christ – must continue to press forward even though we may at times feel hard pressed and perplexed. In this time when folks here and elsewhere are dealing with a health crisis and job losses, homelessness and hunger, changes to school schedules and more, we cannot stand in despair – God has granted us too many gifts and far too much compassion to not act.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support Valley church over these past months of change and uncertainty. Because of your contributions, we are continuing to support our mission partners locally and beyond. Through them, we are making an impact in the lives of people who are currently being pressed on all sides.

This Sunday, August 2, worship service, again, will be streamed via Facebook Live and posted on the church YouTube channel. The service will include communion; if you would like to participate, please choose your own elements and have them ready to use. There will be no in-person gathering Sunday. Depending on the safety and guidance of health officials, we hope to have another outdoor service later in the month.

Blessings to all of you who – during this difficult time – are staying safe, reaching out, and keeping faith.

In Peace,
Pastor John
