“I lift up my eyes to the hills – from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)

Members and Friends of Valley,

As we step into this Advent season, God’s people are asked to look forward with anticipation and expectation to the coming of Jesus.  We long to be reminded that God is truly with us; born as a child, given to know and understand the fullness of our joy and pain.

And yet, sometimes we have difficulty imagining that what we witness and experience could have ever been in God’s mind:  illness and suffering, acts of senseless violence, division and incivility, gross inequality and environmental destruction.  These can be hard times to be expectant; we are challenged to anticipate what positive outcomes are coming.

Noted author Madeleine L’Engle, in her 2019 collection, Miracle on 10th Street and Other Christmas Writings, suggests that maybe what we could focus on, instead, is to observe and contemplate.  As the author of the 121st Psalm likewise suggests, we can turn our eyes to the hills and think about how they were created.  Or, in a similar fashion, we could look to the birth of Jesus and contemplate how fully God loves us in order to come and be one of us.  Here is a part of what L’Engle writes:

Observe and contemplate.
Make real. Bring to be.
Because we note the falling tree
The sound is truly heard.
Look! The sunrise! Wait —
It needs us to look, to see,
To hear, and speak the Word.

Observe and contemplate.
The cosmos and our little earth.
Observing, we affirm the worth
Of sun and stars and light unfurled.
So, let us, seeing, celebrate
The glory of Love’s incarnate birth
And sing its joy to all the world.

Observe and contemplate
Make real. Affirm. Say Yes,
And in this season sing and bless
Wind, ice, snow; rabbit and bird;
Comet and quark; things small and great.
Oh, observe and joyfully confess
The birth of Love’s most lovely Word.

God has made many amazing things; and God has created us with the capacity to accomplish wonderful works.  Still, in this season of Advent waiting, we may be best served by first observing and contemplating the amazing Word God has spoken to us:  that no matter who we are or what we accomplish, no matter what we have done or left undone, God loves us enough to send his child to earth as a child, a baby; to be fully vulnerable and alive, to observe and contemplate all the same wonders, and all the same tragedies, that we do.

Can we act in this season: should we seek ways to give to the poor and reach out to the lonely and seek justice for the oppressed?  Yes, absolutely.  But, in addition to doing and accomplishing, we are, also, being called to be still:  to lift up our eyes to the hills, to observe and contemplate, to watch and wait and listen for God’s Word to come.  For it is:  in hope, in peace, in joy, and in love.

In Christ,
Pastor John

“I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify the Lord with thanksgiving.” (Psalm 69:30)

Members and friends of Valley,

As we gather around tables this week, let us remember to do so with gratitude.  This, again, may not be a year like other years; there may be some empty chairs, but we continue with an attitude of thanksgiving.  God’s wonderful blessings come to us unbounded and undeserved.  We are so grateful.

I spend this morning in the church kitchen, working with volunteers to prepare the Community Meal.  The sounds of chopping vegetables, Christmas music, and friendly conversation made me so grateful that the church is in a position to help others; to make our praise and thanksgiving tangible on behalf of the people of our community.

Carolyn Winfrey Gillette, in her hymn titled “All of Life Is Filled with Wonder,” offer these words as a reminder of gratitude:

For the joy of daily waking, for the gift of each new day,
For the smell of fresh bread baking, for the sound of children’s play,
For the ways we seek to serve you as we work and volunteer,
God, we humbly praise and thank you for your presence with us here.

I wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving – one filled with gratitude and praise.

In Christ,
Pastor John
