October 23, 2020

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.
Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 2:3-5)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

It may have seemed to you like we would never get here…but the 2020 election is finally upon us.  The ads and signs are everywhere.  Tonight is the final debate (we think).  And, as in many other states, people in Ohio are voting in record numbers – either in person or by mail – prior to November 3.

Voting is – to borrow from the language of faith – a sacred right.  It forms the foundation of our democratic process and governing system.  I encourage every one of you who is eligible, and safely can, to vote.  I, also, believe it is not the place of the church or its leaders to endorse candidates or sway opinions.  Thus, I thought these words of Paul from Philippians were appropriate:  namely, that all we do should be done with others in mind; seeking to discern and then follow the mind of Christ.

That is what I pray we always seek to do as the church: to practice good discernment and then act in accordance with the way we believe Christ is leading us.  To that end, we will be working, again, this weekend to prepare and deliver meals to our partners at North Church.  Although, unfortunately, volunteers are not able to presently worship with the folks at North, or serve meals prepared on site, we nonetheless want to show them that we know people are still hungry, to remind them that we care.  If you are interested in helping this weekend, see the information below.

I would like to, again, thank all those who participated in worship leadership last Sunday while I was away.  It was an honor and joy to be able to officiate at the wedding of Kaitlin Olsen and Alex Bergmann – we pray blessings upon this couple and their families.

This Sunday, we will continue our journey through the Old Testament as the Narrative Lectionary points us to 2 Samuel 7 and God’s promises of an everlasting throne to King David and the people of Israel.  As Christians, we believe that Jesus is the heir of this ancient monarchy and the ruler of God’s eternal kingdom.  In a season such as this – in the midst of an election – we are called to remember our participation in this kingdom and how we are called to follow the example of humility, justice and mercy that Christ teaches us.

Worship this Sunday will be virtual – only and can be accessed using the links below.  We hope that you will be able to participate.  Please be in prayer for our worship leaders, as well as for those who will be preparing and delivering meals to our partners at North Church this weekend.

Friends, may all that we do be done in the mind of Christ,

Pastor John

North Church
As we all know, this year’s health and economic crisis has been especially challenging for the homeless and housing insecure.  Ministry at North Church continues to be a challenge as many of their members and attendees have been dislocated during these months.  Without online access, virtual worship was not a good option, so North resumed in-person worship and meals in June.

October is normally our partnership month at North Church with volunteers going weekly to worship and help with meals.  Because of health and space considerations, they are not currently hosting partner church members, but are still providing box lunches for worship attendees.  The Mission Commission has elected to provide a donation to help cover this cost, as well as to make box lunches in Valley’s kitchen to then be delivered on the following Sunday morning.

If you are interested in helping to prepare (Saturday, October 24 at 11 a.m.) or deliver (Sunday, October 25 at 10 a.m.) lunches for our mission partners at North Church, please contact the church office.

Dougbe River School
This year’s annual fundraising event for the Dougbe River Presbyterian School in Liberia will be held on Sunday, October 25, from 5 – 6 p.m.  During this hour, there will be an opportunity to hear from board members about the current operations and future plans for the school, as well as an online auction.  The mission commission has purchased a “virtual table” of eight.  If you are interested in attending, please contact the church office.

Stoller’s Pastry Fundraiser
Stoller’s pastry fundraiser online ordering is still open at the following link!

Last day to order is Monday, Oct. 26th – call Heidi at the preschool office; if you want her to place your order (440-708-2572).

Rev. Bradford Pusey
We are saddened to share the news that Rev. Bradford Pusey, founding Pastor of Valley Presbyterian, passed away on June 13.  He and his wife, Winifred, were living in Florida; he was 91 years old.  I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord.  Those who believe in me, even though the die, will live. (John 11:25)

Let every living, breathing creature praise God. (Psalm 150:6, The Message)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

If you have ever tried to practice meditation, you know the importance of breathing.  When we focus on the air coming into our lungs and then being expelled; when we notice the rhythm of our chest expanding and contracting with each breath, it becomes easier to allow all the worries and thoughts that can clutter our brains to dissipate; and instead focus on relaxing, listening and understanding ourselves and what is around us.

Breathing is essential.  And this final Psalm concludes with the hope that every living creature would offer – with every breath – praise to God.  We do this in the words we say; in how we interact with others; and the way we treat the world around us.  Our praise of God – in word or deed, alone or together – can be as regular, and as rhythmic, as breathing.

And so, if you are feeling particularly stressed or strained; if time or opportunity seems to be passing by too quickly; if decisions past or to be made feel like a weighty burden; I encourage you to breathe.  Practice some form of meditation, if you are able; but if nothing else, then slow down and focus on your breath; the air moving in and out; and let it become a form of offering praise.

People of God, know that you have been formed, chosen and loved by God; be assured that God wants you to be able to breath, to experience harmony with and wholeness with the creation.  And so, let your breath become your prayer; and let your prayers be transformed into action:  loving God, accepting yourself and caring for your neighbors around you.

In the name, and through the grace, of Christ our Lord,
Pastor John
