Let every living, breathing creature praise God. (Psalm 150:6, The Message)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

If you have ever tried to practice meditation, you know the importance of breathing.  When we focus on the air coming into our lungs and then being expelled; when we notice the rhythm of our chest expanding and contracting with each breath, it becomes easier to allow all the worries and thoughts that can clutter our brains to dissipate; and instead focus on relaxing, listening and understanding ourselves and what is around us.

Breathing is essential.  And this final Psalm concludes with the hope that every living creature would offer – with every breath – praise to God.  We do this in the words we say; in how we interact with others; and the way we treat the world around us.  Our praise of God – in word or deed, alone or together – can be as regular, and as rhythmic, as breathing.

And so, if you are feeling particularly stressed or strained; if time or opportunity seems to be passing by too quickly; if decisions past or to be made feel like a weighty burden; I encourage you to breathe.  Practice some form of meditation, if you are able; but if nothing else, then slow down and focus on your breath; the air moving in and out; and let it become a form of offering praise.

People of God, know that you have been formed, chosen and loved by God; be assured that God wants you to be able to breath, to experience harmony with and wholeness with the creation.  And so, let your breath become your prayer; and let your prayers be transformed into action:  loving God, accepting yourself and caring for your neighbors around you.

In the name, and through the grace, of Christ our Lord,
Pastor John

For (Christ) is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall; that is, the hostility between us. (Ephesians 2:14)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The author of this letter to the Ephesians wants to make it clear that Christ is reconciling all things – in this case the division between Jews and Gentiles – that our peace rests in the love of Christ that eliminates hostility between any two groups: us/them, rich/poor, white/non-white.

This verse serves as the foundational scripture for this year’s McClure lectures at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary: Jesus Christ and the ‘Dividing Wall’: Race and God’s Mission. The first of four presentations – by Rev. Johnathan Wilson Hartgrove – was offered last night; if you’d like to see the replay or participate in the coming lectures, visit https://www.pts.edu/wmi-conference.

We cannot escape the reality that racism is sin, and that race is a pervasive problem in our nation; one that the church has too often been silent about or complicit in. Our denomination has taken the step to recognize this reality through the Matthew 25 Initiative which challenges us to:

Dismantle structural racism by fearlessly applying our faith to advocate and break down the systems, practices, and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color.

Having grown up in the church and in the south – similar to how Rev. Wilson Hartgrove described his upbringing last night – it has not always been easy for me to recognize the racism and implicit bias within myself and in the systems and institutions I inhabit. There are, of course, other divisions and hostilities that are, also, serious and worthy of attention; but racism is antithetical to Christ’s message and the words we find in Ephesians; it needs to be exposed, opposed and rooted out from our churches and society.

I, also, recognize that these words might be challenging to some people; but sin – personal or institutional – is not a comfortable topic. This Sunday, we will be continuing our journey through the Old Testament, looking at the story of the Golden Calf in Exodus 32; the worship of idols is clearly wrong, but what – we will explore – led the people to go that direction; how did they get so far off track; and what impact does it have on their relationship with God? Hard questions, but in a modern world filled with many idols, ones that may be worth exploring.

Worship this Sunday will be offered both online and in-person. If you are interested in attending, we will be gathering outdoors (weather permitting) under the front portico. To date, our leadership has still not finalized a plan for resuming indoor worship services. If you are able, we hope you will join us for worship either virtually or at the church.

Also, please take note of the announcements listed below, as we continue to seek to fulfill our calling in ministry and mission, even during these very different and challenging times.

Blessings for Christ’s peace,
Pastor John

Pass-it-on

The Pass-it-on Store is open tomorrow (Friday) from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Pass-It-On could use some help! We appreciate that more people will be available once the pandemic has passed, but in the meantime there are some opportunities to help that don’t require a lot of personal interaction.

Driving:
We have items that we donate to other organizations like the Geauga Animal Shelter, MedWish (medical supplies) in Cleveland, WomanKind (Baby items) in Garfield Heights, Volunteers of America in Aurora, Salvation Army multiple places, etc. These establishments are usually open during the week. Would anyone be willing to take these items for us?

Handiwork:
As you may know, we are setting up a room upstairs for families in distress to come and get clothing if they need it. We’ll soon be allowing shoppers upstairs during our sales. We need a handi-person who can remove some cupboard doors, hang a mirror and hang a closet rod.

Cleaning Up:
Outside the store are random pieces of wood and boards. Would someone be able to dispose of those for us?

Organizing pre-sale:
We have a great group of people who organize before a sale. They usually meet from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and arranged evenings. If you’d like to help another time with fewer people, we could leave instructions.

Working the sales:
We can use help anytime! We understand if now isn’t the time, but in the future you’re always welcome.

Contact the office or Brenda (440-829-7841), if you’re able to help.

North Church Mission Partnership

As we all know, this year’s health and economic crisis has been especially challenging for the homeless and housing insecure. Ministry at North Church continues to be a challenge as many of their members and attendees have been dislocated during these months. Without online access, virtual worship was not a good option, so North resumed in-person worship and meals in June.

October is normally our partnership month at North Church with volunteers going weekly to worship and help with meals. Because of health and space considerations, they are not currently hosting partner church members, but are still providing box lunches for worship attendees. The Mission Commission has elected to provide a donation to help cover this cost, as well as to make box lunches in Valley’s kitchen on two Saturdays in October to then be delivered on the following Sunday morning.

If you are interested in either helping to make the lunches on these two Saturdays (October 10 and 24 at 11 a.m.) or to drive them to North Church on Sunday mornings (October 11 and 25 at 10 a.m.), please contact the church office. Thanks for your continued support!
