Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I have been praying the past few days for my hometown – Louisville, Kentucky – and am grieving that so many who have marched and worked for justice in the wake of Breanna Taylor’s death feel that it has not come to pass. My family members are there in the midst of the turmoil; I grew up with many of those people who have been in the streets for the last four months; and our denomination’s headquarters is located downtown just blocks away from Jefferson Square. My brothers and sisters in Christ – fellow clergy and Kentuckians – are in pain; and they do not plan to rest until justice comes.

As we have now embarked, this fall, on our walk through the Old Testament, we will continue to find stories that are about families – biological and adoptive families, friends and neighbors that are like families, siblings in faith: the people of God that, today, we call the church, as well as the entirety of the human family in all its richness and complexity. As we will see, the bonds between family members run deep; and yet, we continue to be challenged as to how we treat our brothers and sisters; how to replace violence with peace; how dividing walls can be broken down and unity established; how we can confess the role we have played in injustice – and racism – rather than turning a blind eye.

This is part of a statement released Wednesday evening by our denomination leaders:

We as a church have the responsibility to be about the business of redeeming humanity and giving light to all that is taking place in order that justice will reign for all people, not just a privileged few…As Presbyterians, we honor all people as children of God; but we, in reality, have succumbed to pride, selfishness, and the love of power. Our history is replete with racial pride that has undergirded generations of exploitation of people of color, more often than not, to drive economic engines that have fed our privileged way of life. How can the Creator be pleased with this aspect of our history? The only proper response is repentance — what our scriptures call “turning around.”

How are we going to treat one another as family members? Christ gave us a commandment to love our neighbor – even when it is difficult; even when there is injustice in our midst. One way that I have chosen to respond to the racial awakening of these past few months is to educate myself – about the history of racism and my own privilege. I am planning to attend (virtually, of course) a four-part seminar through Pittsburgh Theological Seminary entitled “Jesus Christ and the ‘Dividing Wall’: Race and God’s Mission”. You can learn more about it here: https://www.presbyterianmission.org/story/jesus-christ-and-the-dividing-wall-race-and-gods-mission/ and sign up for free here:   https://www.pts.edu/mcclure-lectures-and-world-mission-initiatives-month-of-mission-series.

As you’ve likely heard me say before, this is a time when we must continue to pray and to work while we pray and to hope while we work. Let us, together, be the family of God; sisters and brothers to one another.

In Christ,
Pastor John

When the Son of Man comes in his glory…All the nations will be gathered before him. (Matthew 25:31, 32)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Last fall, when Valley joined other Presbyterian congregations and governing bodies from across the country in becoming a Matthew 25 Church, we pledged our support to these three aims:
• Building congregational vitality
• Dismantling structural racism
• Eradicating systemic poverty

Little could we have known the developments of the next 12 months:  a global health pandemic, massive economic suffering, urgent calls for racial justice, and dramatic changes to the way we function as a worshipping community.  While much attention has been put on “getting back to normal”, we have learned that in some of these areas – including systemic poverty and structural racism – a return to the way things were will not be enough.  As Christians, we are called to seek justice and to work toward the day when all nations – all people – will gather before Christ in peace, abundance, and joy.

Many of us are waking up to the ways that things need to change and how we – as the church – can play a role in this transformation.  On Sunday afternoon, at 2 p.m., the Ohio Council of Churches will be hosting an on-line service focusing on anti-racism featuring folks from churches across the state.  If you are interested, you can sign up using this link. https://www.ohcouncilchs.org/anti_racism_sunday.

This Sunday, there will be an in-person worship in the outdoor chapel, as well as online via Facebook Live and YouTube.  There will be no Zoom coffee hour this week.  We invite you to join us for worship in whatever way you can.

Blessings,
Pastor John
