“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation.” (Isaiah 12:2)
Members and Friends of Valley,
You are probably aware that a major winter storm will make its way across the country this weekend. Though the forecast continues shifting, it is predicted to bring freezing temperatures, high winds, and significant snow to much of the nation.
This storm poses the prospect for disruption or disaster, but it represents only one of the many fears that we face. Whether on a personal, local, national, or global scale, we all face anxieties and hardships – trust can be hard to grasp.
I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity I had, last weekend, to go and visit my son and other family and friends in and around Richmond, and I am thankful for Rev. Missy Shiverick and others who stepped in while I was away. It was a relaxing and restorative few days – and the Lady Spiders pulled out a great victory!
But it, also, feels good – and right – to be back to lead worship again this Sunday as we continue our journey through the season of Epiphany and the revelation / uncovering of Jesus as God in our midst. Christ is our trust and salvation because he came among us, as one of us, as a sign of how deep God’s love is for us.
Does this mean that we will always understand what is going on around us? That we will know how to best respond? That we never doubt or fear? Likely not, but as we will see in this week’s reading from John, chapter 3, placing our trust in God can bring healing and wholeness, renewal and life in abundance.
For, as Paul writes in his letter to the Romans: nothing on earth or beyond – not even the strongest storms or our deepest fears – can separate us from God’s love.
In Christ,
Pastor John

Knitting For Others
Inviting all folks from 12-100 years of age, who like to knit or who would like to learn, to be a part of Valley’s Knitting Group.
The group will meet Sundays, 12:00 – 1:30 p.m.:
January 25
This group has been busy knitting prayer blankets and shawls for members of our congregation. It takes a lot of yarn to knit or crochet these items. Many of us have made items in the past but have not used quite all of the yarn. Knitting for Others can use the leftover yarn to make items to share with others. If you have any bulky size-5 or 6 yarn that you will not be using and could share with Knitting for Others, we certainly would appreciate your donation. Yarn can be left in the box marked “yarn” in the Library. Thank you so much for your help.

Book Study - Being Presbyterian in a Dysvangelical America
Fom the Cokesbury book page:

Dysvangelical names a theology that is distorted, dysfunctional, and dystopian, twisting the good news of God’s grace into a message of fear, partisanship, and exclusion.
In Being Presbyterian in a Dysvangelical America, Ted V. Foote Jr. and P. Alex Thornburg speak directly to Presbyterians who are disillusioned and confused by how Christianity is being misused in American culture. So often, our beliefs as faithful Christians do not line up with the shouted chants and disturbing actions taken by those claiming to represent a true vision of Christianity.
Twenty-five years after their best-selling book Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt, the authors return with fresh urgency to affirm the heart of reformed theology and what it means to be truly evangelical in a time of theological and cultural distortion…to rediscover what is right and live into a gospel that is still good news for all.
This will be a hybrid study format (in-person in the church library and on-line) – meeting on Monday nights from 7-8:30 p.m. Books will be available in the church office for $15.
Meeting Dates:
February 2 and 16, March 1, 15, and 29
