“Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God.” (I John 4:7, Common English Bible)
Members and Friends of Valley,
This Sunday, for the third week of Advent, we will be lighting the candle of love. Christ’s birth teaches us that love is a gift from God – unmerited and without price – and that our choice lies in how we decide to respond.
During Advent and Christmas season, love can sometimes seem overly commercialized or sentimental. But love is not random or just kindness, it requires purpose and planning. Rev. William Barber of the Poor Peoples’ Campaign offers the reminder Christian love is organized with structure, stamina, and strategy. He says:
Organized love begins in the body. It shows up in neighbors who check on one another, in congregations that refuse to fall silent, in parents who teach their children to tell the truth even when it costs them comfort. It’s not lofty; it’s logistical.
Organized love does not wait for permission. It practices resurrection daily—feeding, marching, voting, teaching, tending, remembering. It moves through ordinary acts until we recognize their holiness.
During this Advent season, members of this Valley family have displayed their love by donating dozens of gift cards to help provide other families in the area with Christmas gifts to share; they have given money to purchase hats, gloves, and bus fares for North Church; and on Sunday, December 21, will provide the folks there with maybe the best meal they will have all season. Our knitters created and distributed more than a dozen handmade scarves to show love to shut-ins and others in need. Our choir has been practicing for months to provide a meaningful music program this Sunday in worship, and many will chip in to prepare the congregational Christmas dinner after.
This season, many of us will be living out love in other ways as well: sharing other gifts or donating to causes for those in need; tending to family members, friends, neighbors, and strangers even when we are told they are a threat; offering hospitality when the world is telling us to close our doors in fear.
This is love organized; love with a plan and purpose; love that is not sappy or sentimental. We can love in this way because God came to us in Jesus with strategy and intention – starting with incarnation and ending in resurrection. This love was offered by God as a gift to us. The choice is now ours: how will we respond?
In Christ,
Pastor John

North Church Partnership
One of Valley’s most enduring and impactful ministry partnerships is with North Presbyterian Church in the St. Clair neighborhood of Cleveland. This spring, Rev. Charlie Hurst retired, and North Church welcomed its new pastor, Rev. Katherine Chilcote.
North Church is a predominantly homeless and housing insecure population. Four Sundays each year, Valley prepares and serves a meal at North; Sunday volunteers depart from Valley at 10 a.m. (taking prepared food with them) to attend the 11 a.m. worship service at North, and help serve the lunch to participants following. Three-to-five people are requested for each Sunday.
