“I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.” (Psalm 59:16)
Members and Friends of Valley,
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a lunch gathering with over forty active and retired clergy members of our Presbytery; men and women who are serving or have served in churches large and small, as military and hospital chaplains, and as missionaries abroad and close to home.
There was no broad agenda to the get-together: no recruitment to serve on committees or commissions. Instead, we sat around tables and shared stories about what we are most passionate, worried, or excited; and what individual or communal spiritual practices help us to continue to live out our callings faithfully.
Several of the attendees – and especially those who are now retired from active church service – spoke about music; how singing, playing, or listening to music gives them courage, comfort, and strength; that after all the sermons they have given, bible studies they have led, weddings and funerals they have officiated, it is their participation in choirs and congregational worship – singing aloud – that reinforces and gives life and depth to their belief in God’s steadfast love.
Our Hymn Madness tournament that many of you have been participating in the past few weeks is a fun way to remember which of these songs we individually and collectively cherish. But, it, also, reinforces the importance that music has in our spiritual lives. Some may be better or more confident singers than others – some of us may even actively avoid having others hear us when we do – but church music is foundational to our faith. And, as this tournament has revealed to me, it does not matter much whether the songs are labeled as praise or gospel or classical, modern or traditional, what matters most is that they help us remember God’s steadfast love; that they reach into our hearts and encourage us to thankfully respond.
Don’t forget to fill out your choices for this week – we are down to the final eight hymns.
And, if you can, please join us next Saturday, March 28, as we celebrate the long and faithful life of long-time member Shirley Copeland, who so loved and gave so generously to support Valley’s music ministry.
In Christ,
Pastor John

Knitting For Others
Inviting all folks from 12-100 years of age, who like to knit or who would like to learn, to be a part of Valley’s Knitting Group.
The group will meet Sundays, 12:00 – 1:30 p.m.:
March 22, April 12 & 26
This group has been busy knitting prayer blankets and shawls for members of our congregation. It takes a lot of yarn to knit or crochet these items. Many of us have made items in the past but have not used quite all the yarn. Knitting for Others can use the leftover yarn to make items to share with others. We are currently making items for babies and young children. If you have any size-3 or 4 yarn that you will not be using and could share with Knitting for Others, we certainly would appreciate your donation. Yarn can be left in the box marked “yarn” in the Library. Thank you so much for your help.
