North Church Partnership

October is our partnership month with North Presbyterian Church.   In June, North resumed worship services, but – because of Covid protocols – is not preparing meals in their kitchen or encouraging partner church members to gather with them at this time.

While we provide financial support to North Church (including a portion of the Peace and Global Witness Offering that was on October 3), we, also, have – over the past year – prepared meals in our church kitchen to send up to North.   We will be doing this, again, on Saturday, October 23 from 10:00 a.m. – noon.   If you would like to volunteer to prepare meals, provide dessert, or drive the meals up on Sunday morning, please sign up using the link below:

Take my instruction rather than silver, knowledge rather than choice gold. Wisdom is better than pearls; nothing is more delightful than she. (Proverbs 8:10-11)

Valley member and friends,

We have reached the mid-point of the fall semester for most students in our area; a time to pause and assess what has been learned and what still yet needs to be taught.

Time and again, scripture points to the value of instruction and the necessity of wisdom.  Much of this can occur in the setting of a classroom, but the ways that we learn are not limited by the four walls of a school building. Instead, we rely on each other – and our common experiences – to be good teachers; we must listen and pay attention to our elders who have acquired wisdom because it is so precious:  even more so than pearls, silver, and gold.

According to our denomination’s calendar, this Sunday’s theme is:  “Educate a child, transform the world.”  We are blessed to have, in this congregation, so many who have been or are presently involved in the field of education:  at the preschool, elementary, middle, and high school, and college levels.  We are thankful for them committing themselves to instructing and importing wisdom on children of all ages.

There is, in addition, a “cloud of witnesses” that assist our young people in meeting people and have experiences which will impart wisdom; revealing the precious qualities of curiosity, patience, perseverance, humility, and compassion.  Church remains one of the few places in our world where inter-generational relationships can be found; where the sharing of knowledge and wisdom across age differences is encouraged and facilitated.

At this moment in time, COVID continues to limit opportunities for some of these interactions to take place.  But this is where those qualities of patience and perseverance comes into play.  How can we continue to set good examples, even if from afar; how do we listen and pay attention when not sharing the same physical space; how do we show people in other age groups from ours that they truly matter?

These are all questions that we will continue to grapple with as the church seeks to educate and transform.  My thanks for all that y’all already do, and for everything that we imagine might still be done.

In Peace,
Pastor John

If you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness. (Isaiah 58:10)

Members and Friends of Valley,

This morning (Thursday), I will be heading to North Presbyterian Church in downtown Cleveland to meet with a group of folks (church pastors and members from around the community) who have been dreaming about North’s future mission and ministry.

Valley and North have been ministry partners for more years than most of us can remember.  Each October, we share worship and music, fellowship and meals with them; many Valley members – myself included – have been transformed by their experiences at North.

Our congregations are very different.  Many who attend North either are currently or have recently been homeless.  Poverty, race, food, and health disparities are daily realities.  They have many gifts to share, but church process and administration is typically not one of them; therefore, we are imagining how North might operate differently going forward:  not trying to fit them into the box of a traditional congregation (which Valley more closely resembles), but as an outreach of the Presbytery; a mission outpost with many partners.

While COVID precautions continue to limit our ability to be in-person with the people of North this month, we continue to support them with our prayers, financial resources (including a portion of last Sunday’s Peace & Global Witness Offering), clothing donations, and with the meal we will be preparing on Saturday, October 23.  Thank you to all of you who have and continue to lend a hand.

And please pray for the members of North and our team that is working with them to move into a faithful and fruitful future in ministry:  one that is sure to look different than it is today.

And please take note of Valley’s upcoming mission and ministry efforts to see if there is a way that you might want to take part; to make our light rise in what can seem like a dark world.

In Peace,
Pastor John
