9/12/21 Service

September 17, 2021

“Are any of you wise and understanding? Show that your actions are good with a humble lifestyle that comes from wisdom.”
(James 3:13, Common English Bible)

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This Sunday, September 19, is designated by our denomination as “Celebrating Theological Education Sunday.”  For many years, this congregation has been as faithful financial contributor to the Theological Education Fund, which helps to support Presbyterian seminaries across the country as they seek to instruct and prepare wise pastors for service in our churches and beyond.

I have attended three of these schools:  Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary for my Master of Divinity degree and University of Dubuque Theological Seminary for my Doctor of Ministry program.  At each of them, I have been instructed by thoughtful, wise, and understanding faculty and learned alongside caring and collaborative colleagues.

Our denomination has long made theological education and training a high priority.  Some may argue that we have even been too focused on the mind and not enough on the heart.  But notice here, in this verse from the Letter of James, the dual emphasis placed on wisdom and understanding; on both knowledge and application.  This is what seminary folks call “practical theology” – right belief informing and being lived out in proper action.

I thank you for your long-standing support for theological education and for the people you have supported and encouraged in the course of their seminary training:  from Karin Wright to Susan Williams to Amber Balista; and myself included.  Preparation for ordained ministry truly is – and should be – a collaborative effort; the result of a community’s commitment to wisdom and understanding.

I look forward to continuing this life-long process of learning with you.

In Christ,
Pastor John

September 9, 2021

God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all the work of creation. (Genesis 2:3)

Sisters and brothers in Christ,

It is good to be back among you after the completion of my six-week Sabbatical leave.  During this time, I was blessed to experience rest and renewal in many different forms:  on travels and at home; during work, recreation, or worship; and in solitude or with family and friends.  I thank you for allowing me to receive this amazing gift.

The focus of my Sabbatical – and my doctoral thesis – is Sabbath:  specifically, discovering – through Sabbath practices – a new imagination for how to be God’s people in the midst of changing times.  During these four years of doctoral studies, and especially over these six weeks of Sabbatical leave, I have focused on experimenting with alternative ways to imagine and practice Sabbath:  to experience what God has made holy.

This Sunday, we begin a new cycle of readings from Narrative Lectionary:  beginning with stories from the Old Testament and then turning to John’s Gospel.  Last week, we looked at the Prologue of John, chapter one; which describes how the Word of God was present at creation and then became flesh and lived among us as Jesus, God’s incarnate Son.  This week, we will look at a different creation narrative, Genesis 1:1- 2:4a, which describes the world and all that is in it being spoken into being by God:  six days of creation followed by a seventh day devoted to holy rest.

The theme of the Old Testament stories we will be looking at this fall is “Out of Chaos, Hope” which comes from the mission statement of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), a service arm of our denomination that responds to crises and natural disasters such as fires and floods.  For, as much as we might wish that God would provide order in response to the chaos in and around our lives, what we need the most is hope.

As God’s people, we are called to join with God who is already at work in our lives, our neighborhoods, and our world creating pathways to hope.  Through the stories we read this fall – some of which can be difficult to believe or understand – we will be looking to see what God has already provided us to help us be bearers, keepers, and proclaimers of hope.

This Sunday, we will be resuming “time for children” during the worship service followed by Sunday School available for school-age young people.  We will, also, have for each family copies of a special book describing the majesty and mystery of creation.  I hope you will be able to join us.

I look forward to this opportunity to worship and work with each of you again; and to discern together the direction that God is leading us as God’s people today and tomorrow.

In Christ,
Pastor John
